Medicare is a social insurance program implemented by the United States government. It provides basic medical coverage for people over sixty-five. But what is Medigap, and who needs it? Medigap is a program that provides additional medical insurance to qualifying senior citizens at an affordable price. Medigap includes ten different programs, which were standardized by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, or CMS. These programs are labeled A through N and are offered to people through private insurance carriers, who sell and administer these plans. Since it’s privately administered, it’s legislated by the state. Therefore, Florida Medigap differs from Minnesota Medigap. It’s important to buy a Medigap plan through a broker or carrier that is familiar with Florida state insurance law.
The reason Medigap is needed is because Medicare only covers basic needs. If you are in excellent health and have no immediate medical concerns, then this may be adequate for you. But most people over sixty-five have medical issues such as heart disease, diabetes, or other age-related conditions. If you fall into this category, then you should probably take a closer look at Florida Medigap. It’s almost guaranteed to be cheaper than any private policy that a carrier can offer you, and with ten plans available, there’s sure to be one that fits your needs and your budget.
Each Florida Medigap plan offers a different combination of benefits, usually in proportion to the amount of the premium. In order to qualify for Medigap, you must already be enrolled in Medicare Parts A & B and must be over sixty-five years of age. If you enroll in Medigap within six months of turning sixty-five, then you won’t be required to undergo a health pre-screening; you’ll automatically be approved for a policy. But if you wait until after this six-month period, then the private insurance carrier administering your insurance may require you to undergo a pre-screening before approving you for Medigap.
So no matter whether you choose to take advantage of the Florida Medigap supplement or not, you should at least be able to make an informed decision about it. You don’t want to miss out on this resource simply because you didn’t understand it or didn’t know that it was available to you. It’s a comforting thought to know that the government and private insurance corporations are working together to provide adequate health insurance coverage for the country’s senior citizens.
