Homeowners Insurance – What is the difference between a Hip vs. a Gable Roof?

Hip Roof

A hip roof, or hipped roof, is a type of roof where all sides slope downwards to the walls, usually with a fairly gentle slope. Thus it is a house with no gables or other vertical sides to the roof.

Example of a hip roof:

Gable Roof

A gable is the generally triangular portion of a wall between the edges of a sloping roof.  The shape of the gable and how it is detailed depends on the structural system being used (which is often related to climate and availability of materials) and aesthetic concerns. Thus the type of roof enclosing the volume dictates the shape of the gable.

Example of a gable roof:

For a homeowner, what type of roof can make a big difference in your premium.  Hip roofs render lower premiums, may it be due to added aerodynamics.  Conversely, a gable roof will cost you more in premium.  Our recommendation would be to obtain a wind mitigation inspection if you do have a gable roof.  There might be a good chance you can lower your premium with a wind mitigation report.  Depending on certain factors, rates can be reduced as low as having a hip roof.
