Florida Healthcare Insurance – Knowing What’s Available

When it comes to Florida healthcare insurance, there are more options available to potential clients than ever before. There are so many options, in fact, that the idea of choosing one policy from among the many can be quite intimidating. This may spark the fear that you might choose the wrong policy or end up paying way too much for it. But here’s something to help you. We have outlined the three major types of insurance policies to help you to choose the right one for your needs. While nuances within each of these policy types will differ from carrier to carrier, this will at least put you in the ballpark of the policy you need.

The most common type of Florida healthcare insurance is the health maintenance organization, or HMO. HMOs operate in a network of approved healthcare providers. When you sign up for an HMO, you are asked to choose a primary care provider, or PCP. The doctor you choose will then act as your gateway to the network. This doctor will recommend you to specialists and will oversee your general care. Since it’s the cheapest option, this is ideal for an individual who is in good health and expects to remain so.

For those who would feel more comfortable with a little more flexibility, the point of service, or POS, plan is a solid option. You still need to choose a PCP, but you also have the freedom to see doctors outside of the insurance company’s network if you like. A POS policy will only cover part of the cost of visits to doctors outside of your network, but you won’t need a referral to see a specialist. As long as you don’t mind filling out your own paperwork and getting reimbursed for visits to doctors that are out-of-network, then this Florida healthcare insurance policy can provide you with a little more freedom.

If it’s total freedom that you want, then the preferred provider organization, or PPO, is the plan for you. You have the freedom to see any doctor you want, and no referrals are required to see a specialist. This is an excellent option for those with pre-existing medical conditions or for those requiring special care of any kind. The only drawback in the price: PPOs are generally more expensive than both HMOs and POS plans. But once you evaluate your own healthcare needs, you’re sure to choose the Florida healthcare insurance that’s right for you.
